Independent fan site. Coopers Fans is not operated by Coopers Brewery Limited or the official Coopers DIY Beer website. This policy explains how we handle personal information when you use our community recipe site.
We respect your privacy and handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), as well as other applicable privacy laws where relevant.
1. Who we are
Coopers Fans (“we”, “us”, “our”) operates the website at coopersfan.com (and related pages), a community tool for browsing and sharing homebrew recipe information. For privacy enquiries, contact privacy@coopersfan.com.
2. Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account details: email address, display name, and password (stored as a secure hash, not plain text) when you register.
- Member content: recipes you create or copy, brew notes, pinned recipes, ratings, and comments.
- Communications: messages you send to us (for example, privacy or support requests).
Information collected automatically
- Session data: a session cookie used to keep you signed in to your member account.
- Server logs: standard web server data such as IP address, browser type, referring page, and timestamps, used for security, troubleshooting, and aggregated analytics.
Information we do not intentionally collect
We do not require your real name, postal address, or payment details to use the Site. Please do not post sensitive personal information (such as health information or other people’s private details) in public comments or shared recipes.
3. How we use information
We use personal information to:
- create and manage member accounts and authenticate sign-in;
- provide features you request (saved recipes, pins, ratings, comments, and shared member recipes);
- display your display name alongside content you choose to publish;
- maintain security, prevent abuse, and troubleshoot technical issues;
- comply with legal obligations; and
- improve the Site based on aggregated, non-identifying usage patterns.
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your information for third-party advertising profiles.
4. Legal bases (international visitors)
If you access the Site from outside Australia, we process your information on the basis of: (a) performance of a contract (providing account features you sign up for); (b) legitimate interests (operating a secure community site); and (c) consent where required (for example, optional communications). You may withdraw consent where applicable without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal.
5. Cookies and similar technologies
We use a session cookie when you sign in so the Site can recognise your account across page requests. This cookie is HttpOnly and is cleared when you sign out or when the session expires. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling session cookies will prevent member sign-in from working correctly.
We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies on the Site itself.
6. Third-party services
Some features rely on third parties:
- Google Fonts — typography may be loaded from Google’s servers, which may receive your IP address and basic technical data. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Coopers DIY Beer — we link to official recipe pages and may display publicly available recipe summaries and images. When you follow those links, Coopers’ own policies apply.
- Hosting provider — our web host stores Site data and server logs on infrastructure it operates. We choose providers with appropriate security practices.
7. Disclosure of information
We may disclose personal information:
- when you choose to share content publicly (for example, a shared member recipe shows your display name);
- to service providers who assist in hosting and operating the Site, under confidentiality obligations;
- if required by law, court order, or to protect rights, safety, and security; or
- in connection with a merger, sale, or reorganisation of the Site, with notice where practicable.
8. Data retention
We keep account and member content while your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account, we will delete or de-identify personal information within a reasonable period, except where we must retain data for legal, security, or backup purposes. Server logs are retained for a limited period appropriate for security and troubleshooting.
9. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information, including password hashing, HTTPS where configured, and access controls on our database. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; please use a strong, unique password and keep it confidential.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:
- request access to personal information we hold about you;
- request correction of inaccurate information;
- request deletion of your account and associated personal information;
- withdraw consent where processing is consent-based; and
- complain to a privacy regulator (in Australia, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au).

11. Children
The Site is not directed at children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can delete it.
12. Overseas disclosure
Our hosting or service providers may store or process data outside Australia (for example, in the United States or the European Union). Where this occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure recipients handle information in a manner consistent with applicable privacy law, such as contractual protections.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date will change when we do. Material changes may be highlighted on the Site. Continued use after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
